Sunrise
From Pestfurlong Hill

Rising Sun | Around the Hill | Gorse Covert Mounds | Green and Gold

Autumn can be a good time to photograph sunrises.  With the sun rising later each day and with cooler nights often leading to morning mists, heavy dew and ground frosts, there are opportunities to capture the intense colours of the low sun across the fields and trees shrouded in mist.  One Saturday morning in October 2007 provided exactly the right conditions and I made my way to the top of Pestfurlong Hill with my camera bag and a warm hat and coat.  The gallery on this page is a small selection of the photos that I took over about an hour.

Rising Sun and Morning Mist

The sun was just appearing as I reached the top of the hill and the view opened up to the east.  The foreground is filled with farm fields, punctuated with rows of trees, each one slightly more obscured by the mist.  The view is towards Holcroft Moss and Glazebrook, then across the farmland north of Cadishead and finally towards Irlam with its industry.  Beyond are the hills of the Peak District south east of Manchester.  As the sun rose higher in the sky, the orange glow intensified and the trees left long shadows in the mist below them.

Other Views from the Hill

Below are three views showing Encounter, all bathed in morning sunlight.  The first is taken through the trees at the top of the hill, the second shows the path with the grass still frosty, and the third shows Encounter coloured by the orange yellow glow of the sun.

Gorse Covert Mounds

Gorse Covert Mounds is the area just west of Pestfurlong Hill alongside the houses of Gorse Covert.  It is managed by the Woodland Trust.  The sunbeams were taken close to the pond.

Green and Gold

And finally, the effects of the morning sun and melting frost on some of the greenery in the area.
